Got a bad cold? If you're like almost half of the employees who responded to a recent Accountemps survey, you'll be heading into work regardless. The survey also found that most employees would prefer their sniffling colleagues stay home.
The survey, conducted by Accountemps, a specialized temporary staffing firm owned by international recruiting and staffing firm Robert Half, found that 42% of employees very frequently go into work when they're feeling sick. Only 7% said they never go in.
Pressure to work through sickness doesn't seem to be coming from above. Only 11% of respondents said they felt their bosses discourage them from taking the day to rest. Half of respondents said their managers encourage them to stay home when they're under the weather.
The survey also asked employees how they felt when their colleagues come into work sick. The answers were less-than-neighborly: Just over a third said they're worried about being exposed to their illness. Another third said they were "concerned about their [colleagues'] welfare."
In an era in which job security is on everyone's mind, coming into work despite the chills, sniffles or shivers may be de rigueur.
